Criteria for Services (for students enrolled in public schools):
Resource and other support Services: Determined by the student's Program Planning Team in consultation with principal.
Speech-Language Pathologist and School Psychologist services: Referral by student's Program Planning Team (including parent) or by the teacher & principal.
Referral Procedure:
- Individual Program Planning & Resource Services: (Please note that each school board has regional special education policies outlining referral procedures within the parameters of the provincial Special Education Policy. Parents may request the school to convene a Program Planning Team meeting if they believe their son or daughter has special learning needs).
- Regional Services for Students with Severe Learning Disabilities (SLD): Please note that each school board has a regional SLD program referral and selection process for the identification of students for regional programming and services within provincial SLD guidelines.
Services Offered:
- Resource & Program planning support is provided by 792 full-time equivalent teachers in Nova Scotia school boards.
- Reading Recovery TM teachers provide early intervention programming for approximately 1300 grade one students at risk for reading and writing difficulties.
- 40 learning disabilities specialist teachers provided direct instructional support approximately 500 students with severe learning disabilities, mainly as an itinerant service, depending on the region where the student lives.
