Why?
What is LINKS?
The LINKS Children’s Literacy Program is a research based, early intervention program designed for children who are experiencing difficulty in reading skills development or with writing, which may be attributable to a learning disability. LINKS is dedicated to helping children become competent, independent learners, through the experience of good books, and opportunities for good writing.
Why we do it?
We run LINKS to address the needs of children who need intervention based reading and writing programs within our community. LINKS is in place to meet the needs of elementary age children who are at least one year behind in reading and/or writing development. It is particularly applicable to children with a learning disability, although this is not a prerequisite, nor is an official diagnosis necessary. A learning disability is a disorder that affects the way a person takes in, processes or outputs information. The disorder affects the ability to learn, in spite of average to above-average intelligence and can affect specific areas such as: speech and language development, coordination, organization and social skills. Learning disabilities are lifelong and affect approximately 1 in 10 Nova Scotians.
